Participants 2006

 China

For China it will be the first time to participate in the Haarlem Baseballweek. The team is preparing and training to participate in the Olympic Games in Beijing, 2008. During the World Championship last September in The Netherlands, China was not yet strong enough to make it to the finals. In poule A, where it competed with a.o. Cuba, The Netherlands and Panama, the team ended 6th. During the World Baseball Classics, the Asian team was not able to win one match, and left the tournament at an early stage.
Therefore China will most probably not finish first in Haarlem. However, under manager Jim Lefebvre and pitching coach Bruce Hurst the team can be a dangerous outsider, during the tournament in Haarlem and the Olympic Games.

On top of that, The Netherlands made Cuba reach 2nd place during the last edition of the Haarlem Baseballweek, which will make this Friday-game even more interesting this year.

The national team formally known as Taiwan, has regularly been visiting the Haarlem Baseballweek. Of all six tournaments that the Chinese Taipei participated in, reaching the fourth place was the best achievement, which they reached five times. During the World Baseball Classic the Chinese Taipei faced Japan, South Korea and China. Although the team surprised China with a 12-3 victory, the finals were not reached.

 USA

The team representing the United States of America during the Haarlem Baseballweek 2006 comes from the North West of the US, a NWAACC All Star team. It concerns an organisation of 36 colleges. According to our contact person at the USA Baseball organisation, this will be a strong team which will be able to challenge the other teams participating during the Week. The team will consist of young adolescents, at the start of their (baseball) career. For some players it will be the first time to play the game in another country. However, the final selection for the players participating in the Haarlem tournament will be this spring.
Major league organisations frequently draft players from the NWAACC. Other youngsters will get a scholarship to play baseball at one of the universities before joining the MLB.
