In previous editions, the team finished in fourth place five times and twice in the sixth position. At the World Championships in Chinese Taipei last year had to settle for eighth place after a 6-3 defeat against Venezuela. The HHW is therefore time for the Asians for revenge.

In 1982, the U.S. national team for the first time present in Haarlem. That team, full of future Major League players, then prepared himself for the World Cup in South Korea and won the HHW. It was then 18 years, before another Team USA would travel to Haarlem, but then took part in 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2008.
